A Quick Reference Guide for Compliance Ensure fall protection- Anyone working in areas where they may be exposed to a fall that’s higher than 6 feet, needs to be protected by either a warning line or barricade, guardrail or parapet wall that’s 42 inches or higher or fall protection anchorage points. This is important for window cleaners but other trade technicians may benefit as well.
Provide Written Assurance- Your window cleaning contractor needs to know that anchoring points, or any permanent window cleaning equipment at your facility has initially been verified to be structurally sound by a licensed professional engineer. This initial verification can last up to ten years but remember that in addition, these areas will need to be inspected annually by a competent person.
- If your building has a permanent window cleaning suspended platform, it needs to be inspected before and after each use and properly maintained.
Request a Written Work Plan- Your window cleaning contractor should provide you with a written plan that will identify hazardous areas and means to overcome them. Their plan would identify anchor points (based on your assurance) as well as areas where safety barricades are needed to protect the general public.
- The plan may also indicate other hazardous areas where additional means may be needed to resolve unsafe conditions like working on an unleveled surface or near sources of electricity.
- Their plan needs to include procedures that would be used in case of an emergency.
Request Documents- You should know if your window cleaning contractor has adequate insurance coverage and that their techniques and equipment meets all applicable Federal, State and Local regulations.
Verify Trained Workers- See if your contractor has their workers trained by an outside professional or a recognized safety training organization. Better yet, see if they are using industry certified workers. Ask if the company participates in a professional trade association as well.
